National Protective Security Officer Training Program Practice Test

The recommended evacuation distance for a small pipe bomb, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is 70 feet indoors and 1200 feet outdoors. This distance is determined by studies and expert assessments to ensure the safety of individuals in the vicinity of a potential explosive device.

The rationale behind these specific distances is based on the type and size of the device, as well as the potential for damage and injury from an explosion. In enclosed spaces, the blast effects can be amplified due to the confined environment, making it crucial to establish a safe indoor distance. Outdoors, the risk of blast effects diminishes with distance; therefore, a larger evacuation zone is necessary to mitigate potential harm.

Following these recommended distances helps ensure that individuals remain out of range of potential blast effects, shrapnel, and secondary explosions, thereby keeping the public safe during a security threat. Proper adherence to these guidelines plays a critical role in emergency response and public safety measures.
